I’ll be the first to admit is doesn’t have the same ring as “fly
smooth” but is seems we’ve forgotten to tell the retriever operator
when we have safely and completely cleared the winch/retriever line after the
zoom launch. As a retriever operator I’m usually watching the spool for
signs of tangles, low line, etc. and not watching the three roll, inverted climb-out
to the stratosphere zoom launch you just executed. It really helps to know I
can begin the retrieve without causing damage to launch equipment or sailplanes.
A simple utterance of “OFF” by the pilot – loud enough to
hear but not loud enough to give me an earful about this article – would
be appreciated. The veteran operators may not need this (or can hear it –
ouch, I am gonna get it now) but it just may save a plane… possibly yours.
Several years ago we emphasized this more and if you think about it… just
yell OFF!!
